Yuga Labs Offloads Major NFT Brands Amid Market Challenges
Yuga Labs, a prominent player in the NFT space, has begun a strategic downsizing by transferring intellectual property rights for several notable collections, including CryptoPunks and Moonbirds. This move occurs as the NFT market continues to grapple with significant hurdles. The CryptoPunks collection’s rights have been assigned to the Infinite Node Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of digital art. Conversely, the Moonbirds collection has been acquired by a lesser-known gaming company, Orange Cap Games. Although the specific terms of the transactions were not disclosed, reports indicate that Infinite Node Foundation might have paid approximately $20 million for CryptoPunks—potentially less than Yuga’s purchase price in 2022 and far below the inflated valuations seen during the NFT market’s zenith. Despite these sales, Yuga Labs retains rights under the standard IP license, as confirmed by Natalie Stone, general manager of CryptoPunks.
Yuga Labs Focuses on Future Projects
Nicki Schiller, Yuga Labs’ chief of staff, highlighted that the company remains the largest holder of CryptoPunks and chose Infinite Node Foundation due to their commitment to preserving the collection’s legacy. Schiller noted that Moonbirds are now in the hands of a dedicated team at Orange Cap Games, which is well-suited to advance the franchise. This strategic pivot underscores Yuga’s commitment to focusing on its flagship projects, such as Bored Apes and Otherside, as they look to the future.
A Significant Shift in the NFT Landscape
This divestment marks a notable transformation for Yuga Labs. When the company acquired CryptoPunks from Larva Labs in 2022, the NFT market was thriving, with some tokens fetching astronomical prices—one notable CryptoPunk sold for over $23 million in Ethereum. The reasons behind Yuga’s acquisition remain somewhat ambiguous, but Micky Malka, chair of the Node Foundation, remarked that CryptoPunks “ignited a cultural movement.” The Foundation plans to establish a permanent exhibit in Palo Alto and showcase the entire 10,000-piece collection at the Toledo Museum of Art, facilitating engagement for scholars and collectors alike.

CryptoPunks, created by Matt Hall and John Watkinson of Larva Labs in 2017, are 24×24 pixelated characters that transcended their initial design to become iconic status symbols and pivotal players in the NFT movement. Prior to the rise of Bored Apes, CryptoPunks were already being auctioned at prestigious events, including Christie’s. Yuga Labs made its entry into the NFT market amidst peak enthusiasm, acquiring various collections. However, the company is now selling off some of those assets, as evidenced by the recent transfer of Moonbirds IP to Orange Cap Games. This deal not only encompasses Moonbirds but also their associated spin-offs, Mythics and Oddities. Orange Cap Games expressed its intent to revitalize these beloved IPs by creating engaging experiences that deepen connections with existing fans.

The NFT landscape has shifted dramatically, with market activity plummeting. Reports from DappRadar indicate that trading volumes for top NFT collections have decreased by 95% from their previous highs. Many once-popular projects have either disappeared or pivoted towards licensing, art exhibits, and physical merchandise as a means of survival. However, Schiller countered the narrative that these deals were spurred by market volatility, asserting that they reflect “strategic clarity” rather than a response to current market conditions. Yuga Labs appears to be concentrating on its core projects, with Solano stating that the firm is “laser-focused on Apes, Otherside, and something special we’ve been cooking up.”

The Otherside metaverse, an immersive gaming environment linked to Bored Apes, remains a pivotal focus for Yuga Labs.
